Dear San Francisco Auto Glass,

I feel like I always am finding new chips and cracks on my auto glass. Most of them I do not even know how they ended up there. It seems that I am at the auto glass repair shop more than any of their other customers. I was wondering if there is something I am doing wrong? Is there a certain way to drive on the road that I just do not know about? Having all of these chips and cracks is becoming quite stressful. I feel that I always have to find the time to go to the auto glass shop. On top of that, I need to find the money to pay for all of the repairs. It is starting to take a real toll on me and my bank account. Could your trained professionals give me any tips on how to try avoiding having any more chips or cracks on my windshield? There has to be something I can do. I would really appreciate any help and information you could give me. Thank you so much.

Dear Chronic Chipper,

We are sorry to hear that you are getting so many chips and cracks on your auto glass. There is nothing you are necessarily doing wrong per say, but there are some things you can do that will hopefully help you out. The following list is some things that you should try to do in hopes that you will get fewer cracks and chips on your auto glass.

  • Never drive behind any large dump trucks or construction trucks. These trucks will usually have small pieces of things and dirt that will come flying off of the back of them and into your auto glass.
  • Never tailgate cars. Tires of vehicles will usually kick up pebbles and dirt from the road. If you are following too close behind the car then the pebbles and dirt will go directly towards your windshield.
  • Always make sure your windshield wipers are good. Windshield wipers will begin to crack and tear. If this happens, they may start to drag pieces along your glass when you use them which will scratch it.
  • Try only parking on paved road. When you are parked in a dirt field, when other cars drive by, they will be kicking up dust and rocks. On a paved road or parking lot there will be much less dirt and rocks that can be kicked up by other vehicles tired.

Hopefully this information has helped you. Of course, we cannot promise that this will solve all of your problems. If you are doing any of these things though, then it may at least lessen the amount of chips and cracks your car inquires. If you have any more questions for us, please feel free to contact us.
